Congratulations to the Jenna Haag (Milton) and Evan Jensen (Medford) teams as they claimed the 2012 Wisconsin Junior Championships at Waupaca Curling Club. Curling with Jenna Haag are Chloe Pahl (Green Bay), Grace Gabower (Milton) and Erin Wallace (Green Bay). Jensen's teammates are Zachary Taylor (Wausau), Ron Bichler (Stetsonville), Kelly Traska (Wausau) and Ben Miller (Wausau). These teams move on now to compete in the Junior National Championships in Madison, starting Jan. 28.
The Haag rink scored in each of the last 4 ends of the game to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 9-5 victory over Becca Hamilton (McFarland), the current National Champion. The Hamilton rink also qualifies for Nationals in Madison. Curling with Hamilton are Tara Peterson, Karlie Koenig and Sophie Brorson.
Jensen's road to the championship was longer as they finished the round robin in second place at 4-1, trailing the Blake Morton (McFarland) rink who was undefeated at 5-0. However, Wisconsin championship rules contain a double loss provision, giving Jensen another opportunity against Morton. Two tie-breaker games were played on Friday, with Jensen taking both of them to earn the state championship.
The Morton rink also qualifies for the Nationals. Curling with Morton are Marcus Fonger, Tommy Juszczyk and Calvin Weber.
Good luck to all four teams of these teams that will be representing Wisconsin!
